Comfy, cozy, and chic—oh my!

How do you take your winter wardrobe and make it comfortable, stylish, and weather appropriate? No, it’s not a trick question. The key to an elevated (and warm) winter look is in the layers. Check out our dos and donts to make your next winter outfit equal parts functional and fabulous.

DO opt for comfort

Name something worse than being cold and wearing something uncomfortable. It’s almost impossible. When it comes to fashion, there is nothing stopping you from choosing comfort every time. Consider soft and warm fabrics like flannel or fleece that give you nothing but cozy vibes and look for styles that are more generous in the tailoring—like a boyfriend or relaxed fit. Not only will you stay warm, but you’ll also have plenty of room to move freely without feeling constricted or claustrophobic.

DON’T over-do it

There’s no shortage of winter wonderland accessories on the market. From scarves and toques to mittens and earmuffs, accessories can be a great way to add a pop of colour and personality to your look while staying practical and keeping the cold out. However, it can be just as easy to over-do it. In the words of the wise Coco Chanel, “before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory.” Not only will this keep your look sleek, it also means one less thing to carry with you, too.

DON’T choose trendy over timeless

Timeless styles are timeless for a reason—they last beyond current trends. While it can be fun to hop on a style trend, it can also be expensive and wasteful to constantly update your wardrobe. Invest in quality essentials, like a winter coat and boots, that are simple and neutral and then pair them with fun and trendy add ons that are less expensive—like a leopard print pair of gloves or a neon scarf.

DO look for versatility

Let’s face it—Mother Nature can be moody. It’s not surprising to see sun, rain, wind, and even a few snowflakes in the span of 24 hours and that makes it almost impossible to plan an outfit. When looking for warm winter layering pieces, look for versatility. Opt for a waterproof outer layer with features like a removable hood and inner lining. That way your jacket keeps you warm and dry in the winter, while still being a lightweight waterproof jacket in the spring, too.

Whatever your style, stay warm this winter!
