Staying Safe for Hallowe’en
Hallowe’en can be an exciting an electrifying night, especially when it means candy, costumes, and fun in the Westshore community. But before you head out trick-or-treating or hit up a Hallowe’en party, it’s important to make sure you’re staying safe, so the night is full of treats, not tricks.
Choose safe and visible costumes
While many popular Hallowe’en costumes are dark and spooky, they’re also hard to see at night. Choose a costume made from lighter colours or reflective material, if possible, and consider adding reflective tape, stickers, or glowsticks for increased visibility. Does your costume include a mask or face covering? Make sure your kiddos can still see clearly and breathe easily or remove their mask quickly if needed, or try makeup or face paint as a safer, more comfortable alternative.
Stay connected to your crew
It’s common for neighbourhoods to be bustling on Hallowe’en and it’s easy to get separated from your group. Appoint one person to be a point of contact for your group (and make sure their phone is charged) then plan your route out ahead of time, set a curfew for older kids who are trick-or-treating with friends, and agree on a meeting place so everyone knows where to go at the end of the night.
Check your treats before you eat
Once you get home with your candy haul, take a few minutes to inspect everything before anyone digs in. Discard any candy that’s unwrapped, has torn packaging, or looks suspicious. If your trick-or-treaters are tiny tots, remove potential choking hazards like small hard candies or gum, and always read the labels carefully if your kiddo has allergies or food sensitivities to common candy ingredients like nuts, dairy, or gluten.
Drive with extra caution
Hallowe’en night means extra pedestrians and many of them are small, excited, and may be hard to see. Slow down in residential areas, especially over the late afternoon and early evening, when many trick-or-treaters begin heading out, and watch for kids who may be crossing outside of crosswalks or walking between parked cars.
Take care of furry friends, too
Hallowe’en should be enjoyable for everyone, including pets. Walk pets earlier in the day and keep them indoors where it’s quiet and safe during the festivities. And be sure to keep candy and chocolate out of reach of your animal friends after Halloween, too.
