Go Ahead, Wine A Little

From sweet sips with dessert to a crisp and refreshing patio beverage, there’s no shortage of wines on the market and there’s no wrong way to enjoy. But, if the wine aisle has you feeling a little tipsy before you even begin, don’t worry—we’ve put together the ultimate overview so you can sit back, sip, and enjoy.

Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Muscadet, and Sauvignon Blanc

If you prefer your wine dry (aka, not sweet) then these are for you. Ranking on the dry end of the wine spectrum, Sangiovese and Tempranillo are dry red wines that pair well with tomato sauces—like pasta or pizza—and complement meats like lamb and beef. Muscadet and Sauvignon Blanc, on the other hand, are dry white wines that are made for seafood like shrimp, mussels, oysters, and white fish, and pair well with fresh greens and citrus for a delicious (and grown up) salad.

Merlot and Viognier

Torn between not quite dry and not quite sweet? These mids or medium wines are for you. Pair your merlot with beef, strong cheeses like blue or gorgonzola, and dark coloured berries and fruit. Or if you prefer white wines, try Viognier with creamy soft and semi-soft cheese like brie and camembert, or poultry dishes that feature chicken and turkey.

Tawny Port and Ice Wine

Dessert in a glass? You got it. Port wine and it’s even sweeter sibling, Tawny Port, are red dessert wines made to be sipped alongside a sweet treat like dark chocolate, nuts, and dried fruit. If you’re looking for a supremely sweet white wine, try ice wine—made by letting the grapes freeze on the vine, resulting in higher sugar content. Sip slowly alongside fruity desserts like pie or cobbler, cheesecake with fruit compote, or a scoop of ice cream.

Whatever you’re drinking and however you pair it, bon appetit and enjoy (responsibly)!
