6 Steps to Creating a Gym Routine

6 Steps to Creating a Gym Routine

Starting a fitness journey as part of your new year’s resolutions? With so many machines, exercises, and techniques, it’s easy to wonder where to begin. The good news? Joining a gym and creating a gym routine that suits your fitness level and goals is simpler than you think. Check out these six steps to get started now.

Define your goals

Before stepping into the gym, it’s important to clarify why you’re starting your fitness journey. Do you want to lose weight?  Build muscle? Improve flexibility and endurance? Or simply become more active? Knowing what your goals are will help you shape your routine and stay focused.

  • If your goal is weight loss: Focus on cardio and total-body strength training
  • If your goal is gaining muscle: Try strength training with heavier weights and fewer reps
  • If your goal is increased activity: Mix cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises

Understand basic gym components

Most gyms have similar sections and a mix of cardio machines, weights and strength equipment, and training areas. Understanding what equipment and space is available can help you find exercises you enjoy that support your goals.

  • Cardio machines: treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bikes
  • Strength equipment: free weights and weight benches, machines, and resistance bands
  • Functional training area: space for bodyweight exercises and stretching

Work with a professional

Hiring a personal trainer can be a great way to find your confidence in the gym. Not only will a professional help build a routine for you, but they’ll ensure you have proper form to maximize your workout and stay safe, too. Plus, it’s a great way to stay accountable and commit to your goals.

Track your progress

While fitness is so much more than a number on the scale. It is important to track your progress in other ways—like the number of sets and reps you can do, the speed you can run, how your clothes fit, and your overall energy levels. Consider making notes in a journal, tracking on your smartwatch or fitness app, or taking progress pictures to see how your body changes over time.

Find ways to be active outside of the gym

Going to the gym is a great way to be active, but it’s not the only way. Don’t discredit other forms of activity like a brisk walk, swim at the rec centre, or signing up for a recreational sports league. After all, there’s no such thing as bad movement or physical activity.

Be patient and consistent

Results don’t happen overnight. The key to success is consistency. Whatever your routine is, make sure it’s one you can stick to and sustainable for your schedule and lifestyle. And don’t forget to celebrate small wins, like feeling more energetic or gradually lifting heavier weights.

Creating a gym routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with a simple plan and focus on learning the basics. Over time, you can adjust your routine to match your evolving fitness goals. Remember, everyone starts somewhere, and the fact that you’re taking the first step is already a huge accomplishment. Stay motivated and enjoy the journey!
