How to be a More Eco-Friendly Shopper

How to be a More Eco-Friendly Shopper

Earth Day, celebrated on April 22nd, is a powerful reminder for all of us to consider the environmental impact of our daily actions—especially when we live in Langford, one of the most beautiful places there is. That’s why we want to help you become a more eco-friendly shopper with these top tips.

Choose quality over quantity

Face it, we all have a lot of stuff. And stuff can be very hard on the environment. While it can be tempting to stock up on things you don’t truly need just because there’s a great deal or a new trend happening, it’s important to pause and ensure you’re buying things you need and not purchasing things that will create more waste in the near future. Use your purchasing power to instead invest in higher-quality items that last longer, which can help reduce overconsumption.

Support local brands and businesses

There are tons of amazing Canadian and BC-based brands on the market and there’s never been a better time to shop local. Not only does this reduce the environmental impact and the carbon footprint that comes with shipping goods around the world, but it also supports the local economy.

Prioritize eco-friendly packaging

While packaging can often draw us in as shoppers, it also means more waste. Try to look for items with minimal packaging whenever possible and recycle packaging when you can. Take advantage of opportunities to bring your own reusable containers and glass or metal straws when going out for a cold drink—and don’t forget a reusable bag for your items, too.

Read the labels

Many companies now prioritize sustainability. They use eco-friendly materials, promote ethical labor practices, and are more pro-active and transparent with their business practices. Take the time to read the labels on items before buying and familiarize yourself with a brand’s values (check their website and social media channels) before making a purchase to ensure it aligns with your values and priorities.

Remember, small changes add up, and together, we can create a more sustainable future. By focusing on supporting local businesses, investing in quality items, and reducing waste, we can make the planet a little greener, today and every day.
