Holiday Crafts for Kids
The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to slow down, get creative, and spend quality time with kids. But spending money on craft kits and fancy art supplies? Hard pass. The good news is that some of the best holiday crafts for kids can be made with everyday items you likely have on hand, keeping costs low and your creations eco-friendly. Not sure what to make? Let us help with that.
Upcycled jar lanterns
Most people have a few empty jars waiting to be recycled, and they make perfect base for a cozy holiday lantern. Simply brush the jar with liquid glue and cover it with leftover tissue paper, wrapping paper scraps, or old magazine pages. Once dry, place a battery-operated tea light inside for a warm glow and add a ribbon or a bow for a finishing touch.
Paper snowflakes and window art
If you have paper and scissors, you have everything you need for classic paper snowflakes. Use printer paper, scrap paper, or even pages from old newspapers and flyers for a colorful twist. Then simply fold, snip, and unfold to reveal unique snowflake designs and tape your creations to the windows to make your own winter wonderland. Let your little ones embellish their snowflakes with stickers and glitter for a personalized touch.
Salt dough ornaments
Salt dough is an easy holiday crafting staple because it uses three ingredients you probably already have: flour, salt, and water. Combine 2 parts all-purpose flour with 1 part table salt and 1 part cold water then mix until your dough has a playdough consistency. Once combined, kids can roll out the dough and cut shapes using cookie cutters or drinking glasses. Bake your creations at 250F for 1.5-2 hours or until completely hard and dry then once cool, decorate with leftover craft paint, markers, or even nail polish. Add a string and hang on the tree or use as gift tags for presents.
DIY air freshener
Simmer pots are a holiday staple that makes your space smell divine. And lucky for us, they’re easy to make. Gather up citrus peels, apple cores, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and a few drops of vanilla then combine with water in a small to medium sized pot. As it simmers, the house fills with sweet spice that’s sure to make any area feel warm and cozy. The best part? To clean up simply drain the liquid and compost the organic matter.
You don’t need a craft store haul to enjoy festive family time. With everyday items and a spark of imagination, you can create meaningful holiday décor and gifts while learning to reuse and repurpose. Put on some music, gather your supplies, and let your creativity shine.
