Start 2026 with Gratitude
Gratitude gets talked about a lot, but it’s often misunderstood. It goes beyond a positive mindset and requires self-reflection, observation, and intention. But the good news is that adopting a gratitude practice is simple and powerful and you can get started right away.
What is a gratitude practice?
A gratitude practice is any regular activity where you pause to reflect on things you’re thankful for. That could mean writing down three good things at the end of the day, silently appreciating your morning coffee with no screens or distractions, or sending a quick text to thank someone for something specific.
The key word is practice. Gratitude isn’t about waiting for big life events and grand gestures. It’s about training your attention to notice small, everyday positives—warm sunlight through a window, a kind comment, a convenient parking space, a completed task, or a moment of calm. Over time, this repeated focus reshapes how you experience your days. Plus, there’s no right or wrong way to practice your gratitude. Consider journaling, drawing, meditating, or simply unplugging and enjoying some peace and quiet. What matters is consistency, not perfection.
Why should I focus on gratitude?
Believe it or not, your brain is naturally wired to scan for problems. While this tactic helps keep us safe, it can also mean we easily overlook simple day-to-day successes. Shifting your focus slightly and keeping gratitude front and centre can have numerous benefits including:
- Improved mental health – Many individuals note that actively practicing gratitude can lower stress, reduce anxiety, and improve mood. It doesn’t eliminate challenges, but it helps keep them from feeling all-consuming.
- Improved outlook – Gratitude doesn’t deny hardship—it sits alongside it. You can have a tough day and still notice something good. That shift can make difficult periods feel more manageable.
- Strengthened relationships – Expressing appreciation often helps people feel seen and valued. Gratitude can help you build connection, whether it’s with a partner, friend, coworker, or even yourself.
Ready to start?
Start small. Seriously small.
Write down one thing you’re grateful for each day. Name three good moments before bed. Say “thank you” out loud for something ordinary. Keep a notes app list of small wins.
Some days gratitude will come easily. Other days it might be as simple as “I got through today.” And that counts. The goal isn’t to be cheerful all the time—it’s to be present. Over time, a gratitude practice becomes less about the list and more about the lens you see life through, which can make all the difference.
