From Monthly Specials to Meaningful Community Impact with Big Wheel Burger
Big Wheel Burger is not new to Vancouver Island. Since first opening in Victoria in 2011, the chain has grown, making a name for itself with great food and an even greater commitment to the local community. Now, with five locations—and one at our very own Westshore Town Centre—Big Wheel Burger is growing in size, and charitable footprint.
“We have always wanted to connect our business to social enterprise” says Calen McNeil, the founder of Big Wheel Burger. “That commitment became formalized in 2018 with the Big Wheel Community Foundation and in 2020, we introduced a foundation donation of 1% which Big Wheel Burger matches as a company.”
Rather than setting specific fundraising targets, Big Wheel Burger focuses on doing the best possible job for its customers, knowing that stronger business performance leads to greater community impact.
“With business scale comes responsibility” says McNeil, “to your people, your community and your planet.”
As the chain has expanded, not only were new customers able to enjoy some epic eats, but Big Wheel’s been able to support more local organizations in their own backyard. To date, they’ve raised and donated more than $700,000 to local charities and families in need and the funds raised in each store stay within the community where that store is located, ensuring the giveback is local and rooted in connection.
“Tying our charitable giving to monthly burger specials came from a desire to make community support more visible and engaging” says McNeil, noting that by linking donations directly to burger sales, customers can feel good knowing their meal is making a difference in their own neighbourhood.
Last year, the company raised over $140,000, with a major focus on food security and funds directed towards food banks, community gardens, and related supports.
“One hundred percent of the funds raised go directly to registered charities with no expenses deducted and all our community charity partners are listed on our website” says McNeil. “It’s one of the most rewarding parts of running the business and shows how much can be done if business, customers, and community come together.”
And as for the burgers? Well, these aren’t your typical burger joint bites. The monthly special burgers at Big Wheel are selected by the company’s executive chef and her culinary team. With a wealth of experience and extensive catalogue of culinary creations, the picks are always crowd favourites and strong sellers.
So, if you’re looking for a new place to dine that you can feel good about? Look no further. Visit Big Wheel Burger Langford, or one of their multiple locations, and enjoy a meal that tastes—and feels—great.
