Preparing for a Pet

Bringing home a family pet is exciting. Whether you’re making furry, feathered, or finned friends with a new animal, there’s no better time than National Pet Day to start planning. But before you sign your adoption papers and stock up on squeak toys, it’s important to do your research and make sure you find the right pet to fit your family. Read on to begin preparing for a pet!

What type of animal should you choose?

Many families think of a dog or cat as a family pet but there are plenty of other great options like fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, or even reptiles. When making your decision, consider things like the size of your home, access to outdoor space, your energy and activity level, and your own personal family schedule to ensure you can provide your pet with appropriate care and attention.

Have you prepared your home?

Beyond buying pet toys and treats, creating a safe environment in your home is key for welcoming a new animal. Do you have a pet bed or cage ready for them? Are there other animals in the home they will need to bond with?

Many household cleaning products are not pet-friendly and common plants you may have in your home can even be toxic. Double check for potential hazards in your space and make time to study up on what your specific pet’s breed benefits from for a long and healthy life.

Have you found a vet?

If this is your first pet, now is the time to look for a local veterinarian. Depending on the age of your new animal, they may need additional vet care, like vaccines, while older animals still benefit from a regular check-up.

Celebrate the occasion

Consider clearing a few days on the calendar after you bring home your new pet so you can spend quality time together and establish a routine before having guests over or taking your furry friend out and about. Remember, building trust with your pet takes time—but it’s worth it.

At its heart, National Pet Day (happening April 11) is about recognizing the happiness pets bring into our lives. Whether it’s a dog greeting you at the door, a cat curled up on the couch, or a kiddo feeding their fish for the first time, pets quickly become cherished members of the family. With a little planning and thoughtful preparation, your family could be welcoming a loyal new companion into your home—one paw at a time.
