Your Summer Reading Guide

Summer can be full of excitement and adventure, but it’s also the perfect time to slow down, relax, and lose yourself in a book. From thrilling page turners to epic love stories and everything in between, there’s something for everyone at every reading level. We sat down with Cathy Jeffrey, manager at Coles Westshore, for her top picks and tips to help keep your kiddos reading all summer long.

“Let kids choose what they want to read, even if it’s graphic novels, manga, sports books, or joke books” says Jeffrey. “When reading feels fun instead of assigned, kids are more likely to stick with it.” She also notes that it can help to keep books visible and easy to grab, like in the car or tucked in their bag when heading to the beach or on a camping adventure. And don’t forget to match books to a kiddo’s current obsessions.

“Whether it’s Taylor Switft, Minecraft, soccer, or something else entirely, kids are more likely to get hooked if the book is connected to something they already love.”

And if your young readers need some recommendations, Jeffrey has that covered, too.

“Try Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell for fast-paced fantasy adventure with magical creatures or Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland for a dragon fantasy that’s hugely popular with tweens.” Or, if your young reader is looking for more mystery and humour, Jeffrey suggests Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston or Smile by Raina Telgemeier for a graphic novel enthusiast.

But it doesn’t stop there—Jeffrey has popular picks in every genre for adult readers as well.

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke is a must read this summer. It follows a woman who is mysteriously transported back to the 1800s where she must explore the past to find her way back to the present. It taps into many cultural conversations around ‘tradwife’ influencers, social media performance, and feminism, all wrapped up in a dark, addictive psychological thriller.”

Or for someone looking to start a new series, Jeffrey recommends The Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. “It mixes chaotic humour, action, and emotional character moments” she says, noting it makes for an addictive and entertaining read that you’re sure to recommend.

But, if it’s a summer romance you’re after, Our Perfect Storm by Carley Fortune is sure to deliver a light and enjoyable poolside read. Or up your cookbook game with Every Salad Ever by Greta Podleski that’s sure to inspire your summer dining this season.

No matter your age or reading preferences, summer offers the perfect opportunity to discover a new favourite book. With so many exciting stories available, there’s never been a better time to turn the page and start your next adventure.
