Tips and Tricks for the Back-to-School Season

The back-to-school season is an exciting time for kids, but it can also bring a mix of nerves, big emotions and changes to everyday routines. From new school supplies and stylish outfits to nutritious snacks and the latest reads, getting ready for a new school year can feel like a lot. Luckily, we’ve put together a few tips and tricks to make the transition a little easier.

Personalize supplies

Generic lunch bags and backpacks? Think again. Personalized supplies are all the rage and they’re a great way to let your kiddo’s personality shine through. Whether they love bold colours, the local sports team, animals, or a particular character from their favourite show, letting them choose and customize their gear can help build back-to-school excitement. Reusing last year’s school bags? Consider giving them an upgrade with custom patches or keychains.

Establish your routine

Summer often means staying up late, sleeping in, and way more time to relax. Jumping straight into a school schedule can be difficult, especially for young kiddos. Instead, start adjusting your routines ahead of the first day. Gradually move up bedtime, set an alarm for the morning, and make slow changes to get ready for September. Practicing routines can also help kids feel more prepared and comfortable for what’s to come once school starts.

Meal prep snacks and lunches

Let’s face it: kids get hungry. Having a few fridge and pantry staples prepped ahead of time can save you stress and help your growing kiddo make healthy choices. Consider washing and cutting up fruits and veggies, stocking up on grab and go favourites like crackers and granola bars, and keeping a jug of water in the fridge to refill water bottles and travel mugs.

Make time to talk

Not every child is excited about returning to school. For some kids, the idea of going back to class, starting a new grade, or moving to a new school can feel overwhelming and intimidating. Making time to talk about the experience before it happens can help reassure your kiddo that they’re safe and supported.

Create a plan for success

Mornings can be stressful enough when it’s not the first day of school. Avoid added chaos by planning ahead. Pack backpacks the night before, so you don’t forget the essentials, choose an outfit and lay it out, and resist the temptation to turn on the TV for distracting morning shows. And don’t forget to leave extra time in case of added traffic or busy routes as everyone heads back to class.

Remember, new routines can take time. Stay prepared, be patient, and have fun—no matter where the school year takes you.
