Halloween is full of spooky fun, creative costumes, and, of course, candy. While many kiddos take pride in gathering the biggest haul possible, the truth is, we often gather more treats that necessary. If your family has more Halloween candy than you know what to do with, don’t worry. There are plenty of fun and practical ways to use up the leftovers without letting them go to waste.

Freeze it for later

Did you know you can freeze Halloween candy? Many chocolate bars, peanut butter cups, and other chocolate-based treats freeze well, making them perfect for enjoying over the next few months. Simply sort your treats into airtight containers or freezer bags (opens in a new tab), label them, and pop them in the freezer—future you will thank you.

Get creative in the kitchen

Leftover Halloween candy can make an excellent addition to your favourite baked goods. Instead of buying chocolate chips or other toppings, chop up leftover chocolate bars, candy-coated chocolates, or peanut butter cups and use them in cookies, brownies, blondies, and cupcakes. You can also sprinkle crushed candy over ice cream, use it to decorate a cake, or mix it into homemade fudge for the perfect sharable homemade treat.

Invite the Switch Witch

If your kids are overwhelmed by their Halloween haul, introduce them to the Switch Witch. Similar to the Tooth Fairy, this Halloween tradition involves children choosing some of their leftover candy to exchange for a small surprise like toys, board games (opens in a new tab), books, or craft supplies. Have your little one select the treats they’re willing to trade, place them in a special bag, and leave it out overnight for the Switch Witch to make the swap.

Share with friends and family

Sometimes, the simplest solution is to share the wealth. Package up unopened candy and offer it to friends, relatives, or neighbours who would appreciate a treat. Or, bring some to your workplace or share it during your next family get-together.

With a little creativity, leftover Halloween candy can easily be shared and enjoyed well beyond October 31.
