Hallowe’en for every age and every stage
Happy Hallowe’en, Langford! With this fun and slightly frightening holiday right around the corner, we’ve put together the ultimate activity list for the whole family. So, whether you’re celebrating the spooky season with your little one in tow, chasing kids around the neighbourhood, or trying to keep teens out our trouble, we have plenty of ideas for how to have a happy Hallowe’en at every age.
For babies and tots
Take cute costume photos – Your little one might not be able to say “trick or treat” yet, but they can certainly steal the show in an adorable costume. Choose soft, comfortable costumes that are warm enough for October weather like little pumpkins, fuzzy animals, or tiny superheroes, and be sure to snap lots of pictures—you’ll treasure these first Hallowe’en moments forever!
Plan daytime activities – Who said Hallowe’en has to be at night? Consider fun daytime activities like a visit to the pumpkin patch. Or check out a haunted house before dark as many offer a milder experience during the day tailored to little ones.
Skip the candy and try pumpkin puree – Babies might not be ready for candy, but they can join in on the pumpkin fun with a bit of pureed pumpkin. It’s a healthy, seasonal treat that can make for a cute photo-op. Have fur babies at home? Plain pumpkin puree with no sweetener or seasoning is safe for animals, too.
For kids
Go group trick-or-treating – There’s nothing like heading out with a group of friends to gather treats door-to-door. It’s fun, festive, and a great way for kids to enjoy the evening together. Make sure to plan your route and remind the kiddos to stick together and leave no one behind. Be sure to start your evening by trick-or-treating store-to-store right here at Westshore Town Centre on October 31 from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM!
Carve pumpkins – Is there anything more Hallowe’en than carving pumpkins? Let your kids draw their own designs or use stencils to simplify the process. Don’t forget to save the seeds for roasting! Then, bring those jack-o-lanterns to the Westshore Town Centre Cineplex parking lot on Saturday, November 2 and watch Langford Fire Rescue drop them from a 100-foot fire engine ladder for charity.
Leave candy out for the Switch Witch – If you’re looking to avoid a sugar overload, introduce your kids to the “Switch Witch.” The idea is simple: kids leave some of their Hallowe’en candy out overnight, and the Switch Witch exchanges it for a small toy or non-edible treat. It’s a fun way to limit candy consumption without taking away the joy of trick-or-treating.
Tweens and Teens
Enter a costume contest – Many schools and local businesses host costume contests—and they can have some great prizes. Encourage your tweens and teens to get creative with their costumes and enter a contest with their friends. It’s a great way for them to express themselves and enjoy a bit of friendly competition.
Watch scary movies – For those who love a good scare, watching scary movies with friends can be a perfect Hallowe’en night activity. Most streaming platforms even have Hallowe’en playlists to make finding the right flick quick and easy. Then just pop the popcorn, dim the lights, and enjoy the eerie atmosphere together.
Host a Hallowe’en game night – If the idea of a party sounds daunting, why not opt for game night? Set up board games or card games with spooky themes—like trivia or charades—and then play on. Just make sure there’s plenty of snack breaks, too.
From first-time pumpkin adventures with babies to trick-or-treating and friendly frights with kids, tweens, and teens, there’s a way for everyone to join in the spooky fun. Remember, the best part of Hallowe’en is spending time together, creating traditions, and embracing the spirit of the season—whether that’s with a sweet smile or a spooky scream!
