New Kid on the Block – Part 1

We are thrilled to introduce you to Sugar Sandwich Design Studio – a super awesome, locally-owned children’s wear boutique that opened at Westshore Town Centre in July.  We spent some time talking to Ettie Catto, founder and owner of Sugar Sandwich, and we have so much to share with you about Ettie and her amazing Grow Along Babywear™ that we decided to split our interview into two parts!

Part one introduces you to Ettie herself, and we think you’ll love her!

Welcome to Westshore Town Centre!  We are excited to have you!  We love your stall when we visit local Greater Victoria outdoor markets, what made you decide to come to Westshore?

Westshore is a natural location for me.  I live in Sooke and all my products are handmade in my studio there.  I was born and raised in Langford, so this is like coming home for me.  My little business has a strongly established clientele in the Westshore region, so I am excited to be able to locate at Westshore Town Centre.

We love local and hand-made products! Tell us a little about the history of how you got started in sewing and designing kid’s clothes.

My sisters and I always sewed our own clothing growing up in Langford.  I became a Home Economics teacher and taught sewing to many students over the years in the Sooke School District.  Sewing is my passion, and I have a particular love of things cute and tiny!

Sugar Sandwich Design Studio is home to Grow Along Babywear™ – the amazing “growth-spurt friendly” clothing for babies and tots.  Handcrafted in Sooke, Grow Alongs™ are designed for long-lasting comfort and fit, with extra room for diapers and adjustable length for growth.  Perfect for cloth-diapering, babywearing, travelling, crawling and active play, we use the highest standard of quality in these comfy, cute and practical designs.

I often get asked “How did you get your business name?”  Here’s the back-story; my mother used to make us a sugar sandwich for a treat, or when we needed a little fun, or too brighten a dreary day.  To me the name means a mix of fun and practicality.

Part two of our interview is here, and we’ll learn all about Grow Along Babywear™ and some of the other amazing products your’ll find at Sugar Sandwich Design Studios!
