Whether you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, savoury side dish, or cozy cocktail, apples are the perfect ingredient.  Read on for delicious apple recipes for fall!

 

Why cook with apples?

Aside from being delicious, apples are full of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants making them a healthy and beneficial boost to your meals. Research has also show apples may help stabilize blood sugar, lower cholesterol, and even lower blood pressure.

 

What kind of apples should I cook with?

With so many types of apples in the grocery store and farmers market nowadays, it’s important to understand the differences. Crisp and juicy apples like Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, and McIntosh are ideal for eating and snacking or adding to salads, while firm apples like Fuji, Granny Smith, and Macoun are perfect for pies and baking.

 

Apple Crisp Recipe

Ready for the perfect apple recipe for fall? You can’t go wrong with a classic apple crisp.

For the filling:

  • 6 medium-sized Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

For the topping:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Ensure that the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In another bowl, prepare the topping by combining the oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add the cold butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Evenly distribute the topping over the apples.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. For an added treat pair with vanilla ice cream.

 

Apple Ginger Mule Recipe

In the mood for a refreshing cocktail? Apples have you covered there, too, with a festive apple ginger mule.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces apple cider
  • 1.5 ounces vodka
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 4 ounces ginger beer
  • Apple slice and a cinnamon stick for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Fill a copper mug or a highball glass with ice.
  2. Pour in the apple cider, vodka, and fresh lime juice.
  3. Top off with ginger beer and stir gently to combine.
  4. Garnish with an apple slice and cinnamon stick, if desired, then sit back and sip slowly.
