Let’s face it: winter in Langford can be less than ideal. Grey days and rainy weather can make winter the perfect time to escape. Whether you’re dreaming of cool cocktails on a white-sand beach, or spending your days skiing on the slopes, there are plenty of destinations ready and waiting. We spoke with Jason Roudette, co-owner of Westshore Travel Centre (opens in a new tab), to learn more about how to travel like a pro this winter.
“Mexico is always a favourite” says Roudette. “There’s non-stop flights from our region to several different areas like Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, and the Riviera Maya.” But options like Indonesia, Fiji, or Thailand are also a great choice with a mix of culture, adventure, and relaxation that can be tailored to your needs and timing.
If you prefer snow to sand, European Christmas markets will have anyone feeling festive. And if you’re a skier, you’re in luck. Roudette notes that international ski trips can sometimes cost less than a week in Whistler, even after you factor in flights, accommodation, and lift passes.
But not every winter getaway needs to involve air travel. Tofino and Ucluelet are perfect for storm watching and local cuisine while mountain spots like SilverStar or Big White offer fresh powder, breathtaking mountain scenery and cozy accommodations.
And don’t forget to give yourself plenty of time to travel before your vacation officially begins. “Living on an island, we need to consider the journey as well as the destination” says Roudette. “Getting to your destination is just as important as choosing where to go. There can be ferry cancellations and fog-related delays that can disrupt travel, so give yourself plenty of extra time.”
Found a vacation (opens in a new tab) that ticks all the boxes? Get ready to book. Fluid pricing means that waiting a few extra days can sometimes mean paying $200–$300 more for the same trip as availability changes.
So where shouldn’t you skip out on costs? Travel insurance. “We can’t stress the value enough” says Roudette. “We can walk you through the options and explain how they apply to your trip. No one likes paying for insurance but they’re grateful when they need it and have it.”
Ready to pack your bags? Stick with the essentials. Medications, toiletries, documents and passports, and a portable charger should all go in your carryon, along with a change of clothes or extra layer.
“Ultimately, so long as you have your passport, you can sort out almost any issue with a credit card, a laugh, and a positive attitude.”
