The Smell of Summer

Summer is full of great scents—fresh flowers, seasonal fruit, salt air. And with a little help, you can easily find the perfect summer fragrance that reminds you of all this season has to offer. But before you sprtiz yourself from head to toe, consider these dos and donts of shopping for perfume.

DO learn the difference between an eau de parfum and an eau de toilette

Just what is the difference between the two? An eau de parfum is a more concentrated than an eau du toilette and as a result the smell typically lasts longer. However, due to the concentration of ingredients, it’s also generally a more expensive choice. Many fragrances come in both forms giving you an option for either preference or budget.

DON’T spritz yourself in the store

This might sound a bit counterintuitive but when it comes to trying on fragrance, don’t spray yourself. Look for test strips you can spray instead. Trust us, there’s nothing worse than spraying a fragrance and being stuck all day with a smell you don’t like.

DO check back on the scent throughout the day

Perfumes are made up of different notes and layers meaning that what you smell when the fragrance is initially applied may differ after a few hours. When looking for a new perfume, smell your test strip again a few hours later to see how it wears and changes over time to ensure you’re still a fan at the end of the day,

DON’T pick a scent based on other people

Just because something smells great when your bestie wears it, doesn’t mean you’ll have the same results. Fragrance reacts with your natural body chemistry and skin oils which can cause slight variations in how it wears, and smells, on each of us. Choose what appeals to you and leaves you feeling and smelling your best.

DO try a discovery set

Before you commit to one full sized scent, try a discovery set. These sets typically contain 3-5 small travel size or deluxe samples of difference perfumes for you to try and often include a voucher you can redeem for the full-size version of your favourite. It’s a great way to experiment and mix up your perfume game with less commitment.

Happy smelling!
